Resume Writing FAQ

Custom Resume Services for Creatives, Leaders & Career Changers

People usually find their way here once they’ve decided they’re done trying to DIY this thing. They want to know how it all works, what to expect, how long it takes, and what makes my process different from the generic resume mills out there.

This page answers those questions (and a few more you might not have thought to ask) about how I help creatives, leaders, and multi-hyphenate professionals turn their career stories into resumes that feel clear, modern, and magnetic.

PROCESS, PAYMENT + TIMELINE

Every project starts with a clear understanding of your goals and where you want to go next. I offer two ways to work together, one fast and form-based, one more collaborative, but both are fully custom and built for how you work best.

  • You can work with me in two ways and they’re both one-on-one, fully custom.

    Option 1: The Speedy Way
Perfect for anyone who likes to move fast. Just fill out my Resume Intake Form ↗ to upload your current resume, target job listings, and details about your personal brand, accomplishments, and career goals. You can still book a quick call before I begin if you’d like to clarify direction. Most people do, but it’s optional.

    Option 2: The Classic Way
This is my signature approach, ideal if you want a deeper strategy conversation before we start. We’ll hop on a call ↗ to talk through your background, goals, and target roles. Then I’ll send an onboarding email with everything you need: details on the process, timelines, and your “homework” (sending your current resume, 3–5 target listings, and completing my personal branding and impact forms).

Once I have everything from you, I’ll dive into research, positioning, writing, and design. You’ll receive your first draft, we’ll refine together through 1–2 rounds of edits, and your final resume will be polished, strategic, and ATS-friendly — ready to help you get seen and hired.

  • Most projects are completed within 5–7 business days once I have all your materials. That includes strategy, writing, design, and revisions.

If you’re on a tighter deadline, I can turn your resume around in as little as 2 business days. There is no rush fee and you can start the process today using my Resume Intake Form ↗.

  • It depends on which process you choose:

    Speedy Way:
You’ll pay directly through my Resume Intake Form ↗, which is securely processed via Stripe. You can use any major credit or debit card. It’s fast, simple, and gets your project started right away.

    Classic Way:
After our kickoff call, I’ll send you an invoice through PayPal, which accepts PayPal balance, credit/debit cards, Venmo, or Pay Later options with no interest. Payment is due before work begins so I can reserve your spot and get started on your resume strategy.

  • Yes! For projects booked through my classic process, PayPal offers interest-free “Pay Later” options so you can split your investment into smaller payments over time. Just select “Pay Later” when you receive your invoice — there’s no extra fee or approval process needed.

If you’re booking through the Speedy process (via the Resume Intake Form ↗), payment is made in full at checkout.

  • If you need your resume in a hurry, I’ve got you. With my speedy process using the Resume Intake Form ↗, I can deliver your first draft within 2 business days. There is no rush fee.

You’ll still get the same level of strategy, storytelling, and design as my full process, just on a faster timeline. Perfect for tight deadlines, upcoming interviews, or when an opportunity suddenly opens up.

  • Yes — I work with clients across the U.S. and internationally, from New York and LA to London and Lisbon. Everything happens virtually through email, calls, and shared documents.

My studio is based in Providence, Rhode Island, but I’ve probably only worked with a handful of clients who actually live nearby. The vast majority of my clients are scattered around the world, which is exactly how I like it. You’ll get the same hands-on, boutique experience wherever you are.

DELIVERABLES + EDITS

Your resume is designed to move with you: adaptable, editable, and easy to update as your story evolves. Here’s what you’ll receive when the project wraps and how I can help you keep it current over time.

  • You’ll receive your final resume in PDF, Word, and Mac Pages formats, along with any fonts used in your design.

I also include a text-only Google Docs version — perfect for those frustrating online applications that still make you copy and paste every section. Each version is fully editable, ATS-friendly, and easy to update for future roles.

  • Yes. Once we wrap, you’ll have everything you need to edit your resume on your own.

If you’d rather have me handle updates, I offer two options:

    • Quick Edits ($49–79): for small tweaks like title changes, dates, or adding a new certification

    • Resume Refresh ($250): for bigger changes like new roles, career pivots, or retargeting for a different industry

Most clients come back for a Refresh a year or two down the road, and some have been with me for over a decade, updating their resumes through every new chapter. It’s the easiest way to keep your story and strategy aligned as you grow.

  • Always. If you ever misplace your files, email me anytime. I archive every project and can resend your documents.

  • I design every resume in Mac Pages (Apple’s version of Microsoft Word) because it allows for precise formatting, beautiful layouts, and easy future editing.

Once your design is finalized, I export it into Word and PDF formats so everything stays compatible and fully ATS-friendly.

No need for Adobe or specialized design software, just clean, modern files you can open and edit anytime.

STRATEGY + PHILOSOPHY

Every line, layout choice, and section has a purpose. My approach blends strategy, storytelling, design psychology, and energy to create a resume that gets noticed, feels aligned, and opens doors.

  • I specialize in creative, marketing, and tech roles — helping UX and product designers, CMOs, creative directors, graphic designers, marketing leaders, creative project/operations managers, software engineers, and product developers tell their stories with clarity and impact.

That said, my strategy works across all industries and levels. I’ve written resumes for everyone from entry-level sales to attorneys to executives and C-suite leaders. The common thread is helping smart, multidimensional people communicate their value and career story with confidence.

  • Resume By Nico is a boutique, one-woman resume writing studio that works one-on-one with every client. I combine strategy, storytelling, marketing, and design psychology to create resumes that sound like you and stand out in today’s job market.

Every project is written and designed with care, intention, and depth — blending data, creativity, and clarity to position you for what’s next. If you’d like to learn more about my background, approach, and philosophy, read the full story on my About page ↗.

  • Because you only get five seconds to make an impression. Your resume isn’t just a list of titles, it’s a personal branding document that communicates clarity, confidence, and alignment. I use storytelling, strategy, and layout psychology to help decision-makers feel your fit instantly.

  • ATS software screens resumes before a person ever sees them, ranking applicants based on keywords and relevance to the role. The real key isn’t the template or layout — it’s how well your resume aligns with the language of your target job postings.

That’s why I analyze the listings you’re applying for, identify recurring patterns and keywords, and weave them naturally into your resume. It reads smoothly for humans, passes digital scans with ease, and positions you as a match from the first glance.

  • Usually, one strong resume will work for multiple applications as long as you’re targeting similar roles. The only time you’ll need alternate versions is if you’re pursuing different types of positions (for example, individual contributor vs. leadership) or different industries altogether.

In those cases, I can create additional versions for a small fee, keeping the core story the same but updating the branding, language, and positioning to match each direction.

FOR CREATIVES + LEADERS

Your resume is designed to move with you: adaptable, editable, and easy to update as your story evolves. Here’s what you’ll receive when the project wraps and how I can help you keep it current over time.

  • Yes. Creative roles have their own rhythm and expectations, and most resume writers don’t fully understand that. In these industries, your resume needs to show both impact and brand. It has to capture results, personality, and design sensibility.

I build resumes that balance strategy, storytelling, and visual design — structured for ATS compatibility yet designed to reflect who you are. In creative fields, the aesthetic is part of your credibility, so every detail from layout to language has to align with how you want to be seen.

  • Because you’re too close to it. Most of my clients are brilliant at what they do, but struggle to see their own work clearly. You’re great at creating the thing, not necessarily narrating it.

And for many women in creative industries, that’s compounded by years of being told to downplay their skills or soften their language. My job is to reflect your value back to you, to translate what you’ve done into language that feels confident, accurate, and true. And it’s my favorite thing to do in the entire world.

  • Every resume I create is custom-designed from scratch! The structure, flow, and formatting are crafted around your story, your goals, and your industry. Each design is modern and ATS-friendly, so it performs beautifully both digitally and on paper.

You can see examples of some of my custom resume designs here ↗

  • Yes — LinkedIn optimization is one of my most popular add-ons. I’ll rewrite your About section, Experience entries, and headline to align with your resume and boost visibility with recruiters. Read more about my LinkedIn Optimization Service ↗

Most clients choose to do both at once so everything feels cohesive: your tone, keywords, and positioning.

  • Every single project is written, designed, and strategized by me. Resume By Nico is a boutique, one-woman studio, not an agency, which means you’ll never be handed off to a ghostwriter or junior editor. You work directly with me from start to finish.

I stay in touch with many of my clients long after their projects wrap. Some have become genuine friends, and a few of us have even flown out to visit each other. That’s the best part of doing this work: it’s personal.

  • It depends on your experience, but most of my clients end up with one or two pages. For executives, creative leaders, or professionals with a diverse mix of roles, two pages often make the most sense, but I never (okay, rarely) go beyond that.

I focus on clarity and intention. Every line should earn its place, and the goal is to communicate your value quickly, not to fill space or meet an arbitrary length. If it gets you interviews, it’s the right length.
